American Red Cross Donation Ideas

Red cross clothing pick up

Homelessness is a sad reality that many Americans face. The numbers may surprise you, in fact 564,708 people were homeless on any given night in January 2015. Unfortunately, many of American’s veterans are down on their luck and they are people who have put their life on the line in order to protect our national freedom and rights. While all their situations are different, what is important to realize is that these American heroes need our help. So here are some red cross donations ideas that will help them to get back on two feet.

1. Socks

There is nothing worse than having cold extremities, especially in the wintertime. They are also practical because walking around every day requires comfortable feet, not sore with blisters. Wool are great for wicking away moisture while keeping the heat inside.

2. Toiletries

Toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, hand sanitizer, shampoo, and deodorant are all small items that can make someone feel more put together during the day. Disposable razors and shaving cream/bars are also a great thing to add to help someone prepare for an interview. Consider putting all of these together in a small cosmetics bag for easy transportation.

3. Blankets and sleeping bags

We all have sleeping bags that we never use anymore. So donate them to Red Cross pickup stations to ensure they are being put to good use. If you have some extra blankets and pillows put them in as well, and the veterans will not have to be cold at nighttime. A good idea is to look for clearance blankets during the holiday season and stock up.

4. Clothing

Gently used clothing donations are always welcome as Red Cross donations. Some American Red Cross clothing donations to consider are jeans, work shoes, snow boots, sneakers, sweatshirts, button down shirts, and sweatshirts. Don’t forget those season-old coats, hats, and gloves.

5. Grocery gift cards

These are transferable so the veterans can buy some food to make at the shelters. Or you can give them some gift cards to a fast food place, a restaurant, or to a clothing store. Sometimes food in shelters are not tailored to those who have specialty dietary restrictions, so doing this will make sure they are eating healthy and nutritious meals.

The donations do not have to be large or expensive, they just have to come from the heart. The veterans will thank you!
