How to Find Leaks in your Roof

Many homeowners need roof repairs because of leaks. The water that gets in can do a lot of damage and create an opportunity for harmful mold and mildew to build up in places like the attic. This video shows how to identify a leak in your roof so you can close it before damage is done.

A simple but effective way to find a leak is to get a garden hose and the help of someone with keen eyes. One person will go onto the roof and spray it down area-by-area with the hose. The other person will sit in the attic and keep an eye out for any leaks.

There are a few tips to make sure this test is effective. Start at the bottom of the roof and work your way up slowly. Spray the shingles from all angles as the leak may be in a location that only starts to leak when water hits it in a certain way.

When the helper in the attic sees the leak, they will need to guide you back over to it which can be tricky. Get a pair of walkie-talkies or simply use your mobile phones so you don’t have to shout through the roof to hear each other.

Once you get in the area of the leak, inspect the underside of the shingles if necessary until you find the hole. Plug it up, and call the local roofing company to do a more permanent repair. For more information, click on the video in the link above.
