Some parents think that the only sleep schedule they should focus on is their newborn’s. But what happens when your child erupts into one of their famous toddler screaming tantrums when you are trying to soothe them to sleep?
It is no secret that newborn babies sleep deeply and peacefully, and getting newborn to sleep is much different than getting your toddler. Toddler bedtime is just another part of dealing with the terrible twos, but with a little patience, diligence, and these tips, your child will be sleeping soundly all night.
Be consistent
Your child needs a bedtime, and no matter where you are you must enforce it. This way your child will be on a schedule, and will not wake up in the middle of the night and disrupt your peaceful night.
Create a routine
Creating a routine will help your child stay consistent during the evening. Feel free to create your own plan, whether it is playing quietly before bed, watching a movie, taking a bath, or reading a book. It is also a good idea to get your child into their pajamas about an hour or so before bed, so they will start getting comfortable and relaxed.
Rock them
Your toddler still needs help settling down, and a great way to do this is to rock them gently or hold them while they are trying to fall asleep. They will not be little for long, so cherish this time!
Keep their room dark
This will not only signal to their brain that it is nighttime and time to sleep, this method will keep your child from waking up in the middle of the night thinking it is time to play!
Keep the naps going steady
Do everything you can to cut back on naps because if your child is overtired at nighttime, they will not be able to go to sleep. This is a viscous cycle, and since your child needs this to function make it a priority!
Do not co-sleep
Keep your child in their bed for as long as possible. If they sneak into your bed, do not make a fuss and simply bring them back. They will soon realize this is not what they are supposed to do, and they will become attached to their beds.
So try these tricks the next time your child throws their infamous toddler screaming tantrums, and watch them sleep peacefully!
