Benjamin Franklin, the legendary statesman, famously stated that the only thing inevitable about life is death and taxes. There are, however, two other instabilities that most if not everybody will have to face in their life, finding a new job and moving from one house to another. For many people the process of going through these two experiences is a source of constant frustration. Luckily when it comes to moving there are certain steps that you can take to ensure that your new start is more a joy than a burden.

Before You Pack a Single Box, Make a Game Plan

There is an old saying, measure twice, cut once. While this is usually applied to trades such as woodcutting the metaphor can apply for your moving situation as well. Before you even begin to think about packing your belongings away make a game plan. Some of the most frustrating moments of the move come once your belongings are in your new home. It is easy enough to throw things in boxes and bags and hope to be able to sort things out at once you have landed at your new location, but the truth is that without proper labeling and organization, you will spend about three times to energy trying to get settled in your new home. When planning your move, think of your house in quadrants and break those quadrants down to smaller sections. For example if you are packing your kitchen plan to have a box that will be exclusively plates, silverware and other dining utensils. Then move on to pots pans and other ephemera. It helps to be as specific as possible when labeling your boxes, especially if you are hiring moving services. While, on the surface it sounds like a common sense tip, you would be surprised how many residential movers think that by just labeling boxes as the general room will make their make their inevitable packing hassle free.

Take a Cue From Professional Furniture Movers

While packing your small odds and ends can be a mammoth task in and of itself, moving furniture can be the breaking point for any potential move. We have all probably seen countless table and couches sitting on the curb after neighbors have moved. Many times most people assume that is more worth their time to just leave their furniture behind rather than play the role of amateur furniture movers. If you do not have the resources tto hire professional furniture movers, you can still take a cue from their play book. When it comes to the large furniture items, the best thing is to make a plan of attack. For example when trying to decide how to move your bed and bed frame, the first step will always be to see if there is a way to easily take apart as much of the furniture as possible. All too often amateur furniture movers try to take the biggest pieces possible, maybe out of a misguided notion of easy. The truth is quite simple, smaller pieces are always going to be easier to move than hulking masses, which make it well worth the effort to spend the time to disassemble the subsequent parts.

When Moving Big Pieces of Furniture Use Your Brain before Your Brawn

Sometime you will have no other choice, but to move large pieces as is. For example, antique furniture is best handled with care and probably should not be tinkered with except for necessary purposes. Moving furniture can be expensive when done professionally, but at the same time it can save much of the headache that accompanies the move. If you must take larger pieces of furniture, it is still important to make a plan of how you will remove the furniture from the house and how many hands you will need to do so. Rather than immediately rolling up your sleeves to heave and ho and piece of furniture that has no chance of leaving through a hinged door, take the time to use a tape measure to estimate how much clearance you will need to remove any given piece it will save your stamina and also prevent injury as well. There is a time for brawn, but also for brains.
